Proof-reading is the last stage of typographic editing before a manuscript goes public, either into paper or digital print, or as a formal submission to a literary agent or publisher. By this point, all the heavy editorial lifting should have been done, leaving only a galley proof to be checked before it becomes a book. Since the advent of domestic word processing, authors are generally expected to make their manuscripts word perfect and camera ready (prepared for printing) themselves, unless fortunate enough to have a publisher that provides the service. In the same way that you wouldn’t go to a job interview in a shabby suit, you cannot ever risk submitting your written work for public and professional scrutiny without first ensuring that the text is correctly formatted and free of typographical and grammatical errors. Even with modern software, this is harder than it sounds – having worked so closely and for so long on a piece, the chances are that you are no longer noticing typos because you are so focused on your narrative.
